Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

1. What do you think Jesus would say about addiction?

2. How is the term “substance use disorder” less about sin and more about illness?

3. What has been your response to people who are alcoholics or drug users?

4. Do you want to change your judgment to more acceptance?

5. What are some of the addictive behaviors you struggle with?

6. What do you think our religion has to say about your struggles?

7. What does our society do to encourage or discourage addiction?

8. How can our church be welcoming to people who deal with substance use disorder in their families?

9. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed that we could follow all of Jesus’ teachings if we remembered these three simple rules which are his rules for compassionately acting in the world:
a. Do No Harm
b. Do all the good you can
c. Stay in love with God
d. How have you practiced living by these rules in the last week?

10. What other scripture passages can you think of that give us an idea about what Jesus would say about addictive behaviors?
